Creative Art by Using Paper Plate

Arts and crafts work is a good way to engage our children during our spare time. It can help children to develop their creativity and imagination. We can make use of different types of materials, for example color paper and white paper plate. We are going to discuss how to make use of paper plate. We give a paper plate for the children to paint or draw. We encourage them to use their imagination and creativity to do with the paper plate.

1. Drawing and painting

We may give the material to our children and invite them to think about what they would like to create on the paper plate. It can be any colour, shapes and symbols. We do not critize or judge their creation because it is subjective and unique to them.

After they have completed their creation, we give our affirmation to the effort of creation. When we praise and recognize them their character of patience, attentiveness and creativity during the art arts and crafts session, they feel contended and are looking forward to do more.

We encourage our children to talk about their work. We can interview our children by audio or videotaping it as the memory for your children. We can write a few words on the journal or back of the artwork.

(a) What is the title (name) of your work(or creation)?
(b) Can you tell me more about your work?
(c) How do you feel during and after your artwork?
(d) Any other things that you would like to share with us about your work?

After my children have finished the session, I used questions to find out more about their work. My eldest son, aged 7, drew several hearts in the paper plate to represent his love for others and God loves him. We may be surprised to know more about our children through their arts and crafts work. We need to show appreciation and have a dialog with them about their work or creation.

2. Create a story

They can draw a picture or story on paper plate. Give our children enough time to color it and ponder on their story creation. After they have finished their drawing, we can ask the children to tell us about their story. They can give a title to the story and write about the content in a few words, lines or paragraphs.

We can put up their arts and crafts work as decoration in our house or take picture of their work. The children will be proud of their creation. I sometimes put up the picture of their arts and crafts work and put in my blog to share with others with their permission. They feel that their effort has been recognized.
