Cookbook Review of "Deceptively Delicious"
by Anonymous
I received the new cookbook, "Deceptively Delicious," by Jessica Seinfeld (wife of Jerry Seinfeld) for Christmas.
The premise of this cookbook, is to sneak healthy things into your kids food.
This is largely done by incorporating various vegetable purees into recipes.
I went to the grocery store and loaded up on everything from beets to squash, and spent several hours cooking and pureeing in my food processor.
With my freezer fully stocked with various purees, I was excited and ready to go.
The idea of putting spinach into brownies, may sound disgusting, but I couldn't wait to try it.
The best part is that I don't have to sneak it in, my kids know exactly what I am doing.
Although skeptical at times, they have been very supportive of my new healthy ways of cooking, and willing to try almost anything.
Let me just say that so far Jessica's recipes are not quite up to par with husband Jerry's jokes.
I have only tried about five recipes so far, and am sorry to say that I have been disappointed.
Even after tweaking several recipes to my own liking, which I always do, I was still disappointed.
Surprisingly, the spinach was undetectable in the brownies, but something was definitely off with the texture.
The banana bread with cauliflower puree seemed to be more promising.
I was worried while it was baking, when the aroma of cauliflower was wafting through the house, rather than banana.
I still had hope that it would fade and be undetectable to the tastebuds.
I knew I was wrong when I heard my daughter say,"Ew gross, this tastes like cauliflower." I tasted it myself, and sure enough she was right.
The banana bread along with the brownies went into the trash.
The oatmeal raisin cookies, made with banana and zucchini purees, had a good flavor but were too soft and cakey.
I am happy to report that the chicken kebabs, which I turned into chicken nuggets, were a huge success.
These were made with sweet potato and pineapple purees.
I still hold out hope that the other recipes in book will turn out better than some of the others I have tried so far.
Although, I must say that I am a little fearful of the chocolate chip cookies made with chickpeas.
I love chickpeas, and so do my kids, in hummus.
I'm not so sure about putting them in cookies, but
I have to give it try just to see.
I guess this goes to show you that there are some things that work with healthy cooking, and others that just don't.
I'll have to give you an update on the chocolate chip chickpea cookies after I try them.
