I have had the great fortune and misfortune of working for our family businesses which now includes a metal fabrication shop along side a chromatography medical column business. There have been many things I have liked and disliked over the past twelve or so years I have worked for either of the two companies. The change in the metal fabrication shop I most liked to see was the use of a business focus program. A group of self made entrepreneurs came together to form a group that would offer constructive criticism to each other with the long term goal of expanding each business dir. When it came time to evaluate Precision Fabricators the business focus group of wealthy and wise men decided that the planning process needed to be re-evaluated. In the metal fabrication industry, the work comes in spurts. There are times when the machinists are crazy busy and other times the welders are the busy guys. The group suggested having a 30 minute meeting where each days work would be planned out ahead of time. The business focus group felt that paying the guys for the meeting would encourage them to take it seriously. We took the advice of the business focus group and now every day before work the men gather together for a meeting with a notebook in hand that each person is responsible for. The change was simple, and prevented many future headaches! The lesson I learned from this business venture was even the most successful of business person should be open to advice and constructive criticism, even if they are not in your industry. Sometimes those are the ones that mean the most!
