Movie Review: Flashbacks of a Fool

Flashbacks of a Fool is quite simply the best film I have seen in a while now. It opens with Joe Scot (Daniel Craig), a movie star in danger of losing his livelihood, who is living a life of sex, drugs and way too much alcohol in his luxury home in Malibu. It isn’t until he receives some bad news by telephone from his mother back in England that he takes a longer look at his life and begins to face up to the ghosts from his past.

The film then takes us back in time to Joes’s formative years in 1970’s England. The atmosphere created in this part of the film is exceptional. We see Joe living in a minuscule beach front community which is made up of just three houses. One where he lives with his family, one which houses and old woman, and one inhabited by the fateful Evelyn and her own young family. Evelyn, played by the brilliant Jodhi May, seduces Joe with devastating consequences.

The characters are brought together in this film to tell a story of how selfishness and just one thoughtless mistake can change people’s lives irretrievably. It features a strong cast, including Alfie Allen, who I see so much of lately (TV, theatre, films) it’s beginning to feel as if he’s always been around, Mark Strong and Olivia Williams.

The script seems to flow effortlessly with some hilarious lines coming from the old lady, Mrs Rogers, and the film is beautifully shot throughout.

This film manages a very rare thing, with the sound track of Bowie and Roxy Music and the atmosphere of small town England perfectly captured, it will truly make you laugh out loud in one moment and cry quietly in the next. A definite must see.
