When I was first introduced to the idea of online tutoring I have to say I was skeptical, as I always am when it comes to education and my children.

I always want the best for them and really researched the subject.

I approached the subject of online tutoring with a VERY critical stance and must admit that I had a bias favoring the local 'brick and mortar' tutoring centers.

So I prepared the list of questions that I would use to compare the standard off line tutors and develop a scale as a way to rate and weigh the pro's and con's of each.

After all of the research that I performed there was one company GlobalScholar.com
that I considered to be the absolute best in the area of online tutoring.

Credentials

When dealing with any person that is going to be working with my children I want to be sure trhat they are not only qualified but that my children will be safe.

I was very impressed that All of the Teachers and Tutors go through a background check as well as a check is performed on their credentials.

Range of Subjects and Number of Teachers and Grades Taught

So my next criteria was the range of subjects taught.

They had all of the classes and subjects that one would expect and just as important to me was the fact that there was a large selection of tutors available.

From my years of being a student and being teamed with flight instructors I understand the importance of having an instructor that personalities match up.

As of March 24th, 2008 here were the classes available and the number of teachers that were available in that area.

I was very impressed with the options.

Subjects:
* English (241)
* Mathematics (377)
* Computer Science (25)
* Science (156)
* Social Studies (92)
* Languages (76)
* Other (51)
* Arts & Music (29)
* Test Prep (118)
* Accounting (15)
* Finance (14)
* Economics (21)

Grades:

* Grades K-5 (404)
* Grades 6-8 (581)
* Grades 9-12 (762)
* College (488)

Test Prep:

# State achievement tests (27)
# SAT I (55)
# PSAT (11)
# ACT (23)
# SAT II (14)
# International Baccalaureate (IB) (6)
# Advanced Placement (AP) (35)

What did surprise me (pleasantly) were the options available under the Other Section.

There were 2 offerings that I really found interesting:

One was called "I learn differently-Help!" - It is designed to figure out how the student learns so that the program can be best designed to teach the way the student learns.

The other was Study Skills - This program really works on developing and polishing the students skills so they get the most out of the time. Learn more in less time.
