University- UMASS Amherst College Review: Choosing Classes
Typically, you want to choose smaller classes at UMass mainly because there is more teacher-student interaction.
The teacher knows you and therefore you are far less hesitant to approach them.
However, this is not always up to you.
The majority of classes at
UMASS are big lecture halls with an average of 200-400 students in each class.
Due to the amount of students on campus these classes are necessary simply because of over-population on campus.
Unfortunately, though there are office hours a teacher simply does not have the time to give equal and undivided attention to each student.
In this case, Teaching Assistants (TA’s) are usually available in all classes.
These individuals have full access to the curriculum for the semester and can answer questions when the professor is not around and when class is not in session.
Utilize these people as much as you can.
If you are lost on particular concepts in class, they will be able to explain them to you in ways perhaps a professor cannot.
