University- UMASS Amherst College Review: Residential Life

This is one of the most important facets of life at UMASS clearly because you want to make a good decision in terms of where to live.

Freshman and sophomores are required to live on campus and I am going to be direct and tell you that where you choose to live depends on your goals and objectives in college.

For those that want to have a good time in college and get the most out of the social experience of being in college, I recommend living in the Southwest Area of the campus.

This part of campus is where most freshman and sophomores and even Juniors choose to live year in and year out because there is a very festive and friendly vibe that exists throughout every building in Southwest and any of you incoming Freshman who begin your college experience living here will know exactly what I am talking about throughout your first couple of weeks.

You will find the majority of students living here mainly for that reason.

Though Southwest is a great place to socialize and have a good time, I caution you to not get caught up heavily in some of the negative things that go on here.

There are some students (and you usually know who) that tend to engage in excessive partying and other such unproductive activities.

You obviously do not want to get caught up in what these students do and stray away from the whole reason you are in college in the first place and that is to learn.

There is a saying that has become pretty popular at UMass that was delivered to the new incoming class the first day of orientation by one of the teachers: “Look to your left and look to your right, both of these people probably will not be here next semester.”

This statement turned out to be quite true, as I came across a good number of individuals who could not keep up with schoolwork and extra-curricular activities at the same time.

Don’t be that guy! Stay on top of your work and party on weekends.

That is what they are for.
Other areas residential areas include Central which is located right in the middle of campus and is easily accessible to many important areas in and around campus (i.e. the gym, dining commons and classes.) Orchard Hill is more or less a quiet area.

You are going to find it very easy to study as kids who choose to live here prefer to have a very quiet area as well as one that is not conducive to distractions.

P.S- Be prepared to walk up and down a very steep hill everyday to class if you decide to live here!

Sylvan is a residential area with designated suites.

Instead of having one roommate, you will have several but the living space is considerably larger than a regular dorm room.

Last but not least, there is the Northeast residential area.

I do not know a great deal about Northeast except for the fact that is has an extremely large proportion of Asian students and that it has the greatest dining common on campus and that is the Oak Room.

**I will talk more about this dining hall in the food section.
