What's the Profile of a College Student? Are you and your teenager having discussions about college? Are the two of you stressing out over it. Well I understand. There are two things you can bank on; the first is expense and the second is competition. However, I say don't let either one of those things keep you child out of college. Let’s clear something up early. Everyone in college is not a genius. As a matter of fact most people in college are not geniuses. The valedictorian of your son or daughters high school class will most likely not graduate number one in their college class. As a matter of fact that person could end up doing something stupid and not even see their sophomore year. Drugs, alcohol, unprotected sex and love sometimes get in the way. This applies to smart rich kids, smart poor kids, and other kids who just don't use good judgment. Hey it happens! We don't like to talk about it but it's reality. It's kind of like life; so if you haven't had certain conversations with your teenager, you might want to do so.
I may cover some of the items mentioned above in other articles but right now I want to discuss your child and whether or not they fit the profile of a college student. So who is he or she? Are they the student who is very popular, makes good grades (A's and B's) and involved in so many activities that their social calendar is completely booked and they're only 16 or 17 years old? Well good. They'll fit right in. Campuses are full of people like them. The activities that your child is involved in will help with their application process. Many schools today look for more than academics. They also look at involvement in things like volunteerism, sports, work and other school and community activities. This shows that the student is a well-rounded individual that has the ability to juggle balls and stay balanced. This is good.
Is your teenager the straight A student who only goes to school and study? No activities because they think these activities may take away from their studies? Maybe he or she is a little shy in social settings so they don't involve themselves. Well guess what?
They'll fit right in too; there are also tons of people on campus like them! Many schools however will look at their counterparts with slightly lower grades but with the activities and choose them ahead of the straight A students without the outside activities because of the socialization qualities that they bring. However, your child will still get into a great school and will have the opportunity to grow and develop their social skills.
